Flexco Flextuft vs. Rubber Tile: Speed, Cost & the Theory of Drift

Ask ten people across different industries what "drift" means, and you'll get ten different answers.

To a conveyor plant manager, drift is the belt wandering off its pulleys—a problem Flexco has been solving for over a century. To a flooring contractor, drift means something else: the color variation between production batches, the difference that turns a newly installed floor into a visible patchwork. The theory underneath is the same, though. Materials drift. They vary between batches, between production runs, between suppliers. The question is how well a manufacturer controls that variation.

On top of that is the cost of downtime: the day or two the space can't be used while adhesive cures. In flooring, the theory of drift is this: every production batch of tile has measurable variation in color, texture, or dimension. Within a single batch, the variation is small enough to be invisible. Between batches produced at different times or under different conditions, the variation grows. When a project needs material from a second batch, you risk seeing a difference that your client won't ignore.

Rush jobs amplify this risk because you rarely get the luxury of ordering all tile in one run. You order for the main space, then the owner calls with a "small addition"—a stairwell, a corridor, a closet—and you need matching material fast. That material comes from a different batch. Now drift is your problem.

In my experience across 15+ Flextuft projects, batch consistency has been tight. On one medical office job, we needed a second run of Flextuft for a last-minute stair addition. When it arrived, we laid a piece next to the original install, and the match was close enough that the owner couldn't tell which was which. A year earlier, a rubber tile project had gone the opposite direction: the second batch read as a different color entirely. We pulled up 60 linear feet and reinstalled. Which Should You Pick?

If your project has a drop-dead date, choose Flexco Flextuft for three reasons: it installs faster, the quote aligns with the invoice, and drift risk is lower.

Choose traditional rubber tile when:

  • Your timeline allows a multi-day install with full adhesive cure
  • Your installer has substantial rubber tile experience
  • Your project is large enough that raw material cost matters at scale

That's the framework I use. It's not a universal law—our context is a mid-size commercial contractor handling retail, office, and medical projects. If you're managing a 100,000-square-foot facility, the math may shift.

But when the clock is real, and the client's business depends on opening that door on time, I know which material I trust.
