Flexco Base 2000 Wall Base: A 7-Step Quality Checklist for Specifiers and Installers

Step 3: Check substrate moisture and flatness

This is the step most people skip. Wall base doesn't fail because the rubber is bad. It fails because the wall or floor slab is damp, dusty, or uneven. Test concrete moisture per the manufacturer's limit. Check for curing compounds, sealers, and old adhesive residue.

I'm not a concrete scientist, so I can't tell you which moisture test is right for every slab. What I can tell you from a quality perspective is this: if the substrate isn't documented, you own the risk.

Step 4: Acclimate the material—and the adhesive

Bring wall base and adhesive into the space 24-48 hours before installation. Not in a cold truck. Not in a hot storage trailer. In the actual room, at service temperature.

Adhesive that's too cold won't grab. Material that's too cold won't bend. Seriously, this one step prevents a lot of callbacks.

Step 5: Use the specified adhesive and open time

Match the adhesive to the substrate and the wall base. Don't let an installer swap in whatever's on the truck. Check the open time—how long the adhesive stays workable after spreading. On a long corridor, spread only what you can install before it skins over.

Step 6: Install, roll, and inspect in sections

Look for gaps, lifted edges, adhesive squeeze-out, and crooked seams. Fix them now. Rework after cure costs way more—labor, material, and schedule.

Checkpoint: No gaps at floor line. Corners tight. Seams aligned. Adhesive transfer visible.

Step 7: Document the closeout package

Take photos before, during, and after. Keep product data sheets, adhesive records, moisture readings, and any approved substitutions. This isn't paperwork for its own sake. It's what protects you when someone asks why a seam opened six months later.

Common mistakes and cost traps

The lowest quoted price for wall base is rarely the lowest total cost. TCO includes: base material, adhesive, primer, trim, substrate prep, labor, and rework. A cheap adhesive that fails in a humid corridor can cost more than the premium option. Trust me on this one.

  • Mistake: Installing over dirty or damp walls. Fix: Clean and test first.
  • Mistake: Skipping acclimation. Fix: 24-48 hours in the room.
  • Mistake: Ordering no extra trim. Fix: 5-10% overage.
  • Mistake: Accepting substitute products without a data sheet. Fix: Get the submittal approved.
