Stop Treating Conveyor Belt Splices Like Commodities: Why We Stick With Flexco
Here's my problem with the way most maintenance teams buy conveyor belt supplies: they shop for the absolute lowest per-unit price like they're buying office paper.
In my role, I review every product that reaches our operations floor — roughly 200 unique SKUs annually across four different mine sites. I've rejected over 12% of first deliveries in 2025 alone due to spec deviations. And seven years of this job have taught me one thing very clearly: the cheapest belt splice or finger cutter is almost never the most cost-effective choice.
That might sound like a truism. But in practice, procurement teams routinely ignore this because their KPIs are built around unit cost reduction. I'm writing this to push back against that thinking — from the perspective of someone who has to live with those purchasing decisions long after the invoice is paid.
The Case For Looking Beyond The Unit Price
Argument 1: The hidden cost of sub-spec hardware is measurable (and often brutal)
In Q1 2024, we received a batch of 500 conveyor belt fasteners where the bar dimension was 0.3mm off spec — measured against our internal standard of 4.8mm ±0.1mm. The vendor claimed it was 'within industry standard.' We rejected the batch and made them redo it at their cost.
But here's what the unit price comparison missed: that 0.3mm variance meant I had to send two of our fitters back for 22 hours of labor to replace the already-installed mis-spec hardware. The total cost of that correction was about $4,200 in labor plus 16 hours of conveyor downtime. The 'savings' from buying that cheaper bulk pack: around $180.
Now, that’s an extreme case. But it illustrates a general truth: when you're dealing with conveyor components operating under heavy load and constant abrasion, small dimensional tolerances matter more than spreadsheet math captures.
Argument 2: Consistency matters more than one-off performance
I can't speak for every operation, but our sites run about 35,000 tons of material per day across primary, secondary, and tertiary conveyor lines. We need belt splices and finger cutters that behave identically — every single time — so our maintenance crews can plan downtime and keep spares predictable.

This calculation works for their fasteners too. The initial buy-in is higher. But the total cost over the lifespan of the product — factoring in rework rates, downtime, and consistency — favors Flexco every time in my experience.
But what about buyers who are under budget pressure?
Look, I get it. I've sat in quarterly reviews where the finance team asks why our maintenance spend is 'above market.' The temptation to chase lowest-quoted alternatives is real. And sometimes it works — I can think of two instances where a non-Flexco supplier met our specs for less and held up fine over a short trial.
Those are exceptions. For our volume and operating conditions, the rule still holds: you pay less upfront for alternatives, but you pay more in total.
If you're a smaller operation with lighter loads and longer lead times for replacement, maybe the calculus shifts. I can only speak to our context — mid-to-heavy industrial conveying in a mining environment with high utilization. Your mileage might legitimately vary.
But here's what I know for sure: when a conveyor belt goes down unexpectedly, nobody in the maintenance shed cares that you saved $70 on the cutter. They care that the splice failed, and now production is losing $X per hour.
Bottom line
I’m not saying Flexco is always the right answer for every budget or every application — that would be a ridiculous overstatement. But I am saying that if your procurement process is built around minimizing initial outlay rather than minimizing total cost of ownership, you're making a systematic error that will cost you more in the long run.
In my experience managing roughly 200 unique items across 4 mine sites over 7 years, the lowest quote has cost us more in 3 out of 5 cases. That's not a great track record for the 'lowest first price' approach. Flexco products, for us, have consistently delivered the reliability and consistency that makes them cheaper overall.
So before you sign off on that cheaper maintenance supply order — ask yourself: are you optimizing for the invoice today, or for the operation's uptime tomorrow?
