Why Conveyor Belt Fastener Failures Are Usually a Process Problem

I’ve lost count of the belt splice failures I’ve reviewed. But I haven’t lost count of what they cost. As quality and brand compliance manager at a bulk materials handling company, I sign off on every conveyor installation before it reaches customers—roughly 150 per year. Installation is treated as an afterthought

Fastener installation is often handed to whoever is available. They get a hammer, a block of wood, and a deadline. The lacing gets driven in unevenly, staples miss the belt carcass, and the splice fails under tension. Then someone blames the fastener.

I’ve seen the reverse side too. The upside of doing it right is not exciting—it’s just boring, reliable production. The risk of doing it cheap is that you’re one splice away from a complete belt replacement. The expected value says invest in the process, but the downside feels uncomfortable until you’ve tested it.

There’s a clear difference between hawk and dove maintenance teams. The hawk watches every meter, tracks every splice, and questions unusual wear. The dove hopes the belt will somehow make it to planned shutdown. In my experience, the hawks spend less overall—even when their tooling and consumables cost more per unit.

A Short Word on the Fix

You don’t need a miracle product. You need a process.

From the quality reviews I’ve run, the fix looks like this:

  • Confirm the belt thickness and application before ordering fasteners.
  • Use the right installation tools—a Flexco SDT or equivalent, not a hammer and a block of wood.
